Menopause And Weight Gain

By pinky, 2 May, 2010, No Comment

Talking to most women over 50 you will quickly find that menopause and weight gain are linked in their experience. It is very common to put on weight at this time and while some of this may be due to lifestyle changes, that does not explain why suddenly we develop a tendency to put on weight at different parts of the body, especially the abdomen, while any weight gained when we were younger tended to be centered on the hips.

The truth is that hormonal changes do have a part to play in this, although the process is not completely understood. At menopause a woman stops ovulating, her monthly menstruation periods end, and her body produces much lower levels of the female hormone estrogen which is responsible for the ovulation process. Low estrogen has been shown to cause weight gain in animals and it almost certainly is the reason why our bodies change shape. While women of childbearing age store fat in the lower body, after menopause they store it on the abdomen instead, like men. This leads to a greater risk of heart disease.

At the same time, both men and women tend to find muscle turning to fat as they grow older, and the metabolism slows down. This means that if you do not adjust your eating habits you will probably find that your weight increases. A person of 60 just does not need as many calories as a person of 40.

Hormone therapy with estrogen is sometimes prescribed to control menopausal symptoms. Many women will be surprised to hear that studies have shown that hormone therapy does not cause weight gain. Some women experience bloating and water retention in the early stages of hormone therapy but this is usually temporary and they have not gained any fat. Hormone therapy can reduce the risk of heart disease by preventing the changes in storage of body fat around the abdomen and lowering cholesterol. However, hormone therapy has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer in some studies. You may want to consider a homeopathic alternative, such as phytoestrogen. You can find phytoestrogen creams or tablets at your local health food stores. Since it is made from natural, plant based sources, there are no harmful side effects and also help with premenopausal symptoms.

If you find that you are gaining weight around menopause, there are several things you can do.

- Eat a healthy, low fat diet with plenty of fiber, avoiding sugar.

- Take regular exercise. As people get older their physical activity levels naturally drop. Work often becomes less physically demanding, there are no kids to run around after, we take less active holidays and do things more slowly. 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day will help to balance out the effect of this.

- Maintain your muscle strength and mass. Use weights for arm muscles and walking or cycling for legs.

- Accept the changes to the shape of your body. If you are not overweight, but simply have a thicker waist and slimmer legs, that is fine.

Consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program if you have any medical conditions or your fitness levels are low. Your doctor can also help with symptoms of the menopause and weight gain.

Green Tea Weight Loss Plan

By pinky, 29 January, 2010, 1 Comment

Many people are now turning to inexpensive and natural green tea weight loss plans to help them in their weight control efforts. It is simple too. Green tea can be drunk like any other tea, usually without milk or sweeteners, or if you do not like the taste you can purchase green tea extract, which is said to be more effective due to it’s potency.

Research has shown that green tea helps to reduce weight by stimulating the body’s thermogenesis process, which increases the expenditure of energy and the oxidization of fat in the body. Many compounds found in plants have this effect. The special thing about green tea is that it does not increase the heart rate, and is therefore believed to be safer than diet pills such as ephidrine that also work by stimulating thermogenesis.

A lot of people who are overweight have or are at risk of developing hypertension and other cardiovascular problems, so the fact that green tea does not put pressure on the heart makes it a good choice. Ephidrine is not usually recommended if you are in this group but green tea is considered a safe option. It means that you can gradually increase your exercise levels without increasing your risk of heart problems.

There are only two ways to lose weight: one way is by eating less (consuming fewer calories) and the other is by increasing expenditure of energy (using up more calories). Green tea works by increasing output and this can be by around 4%. Most scientists believe that this is caused by the high quantity of catechin that is in the tea and its extract.

Green tea has the added benefit of containing powerful antioxidants that may be beneficial to your health in many ways, strengthening the immune system and protecting against disease.

Keep in mind that green tea does contain caffeine so you should cut out coffee and other forms of tea while you are taking it. Decaffeinated green tea is not recommended because the chemical processes that are used to remove the caffeine may destroy the beneficial properties of the plant.

At the same time you will need to exercise control in what you eat. If you eat more to compensate for the calories that are burnt by the tea, you will not lose any weight. Keeping to the same calorific intake that you have now and taking green tea should result in gradual weight loss and better energy levels over a few weeks. You can of course increase the speed of this by reducing calorie consumption and/or increasing exercise.

Green tea is a simple, easy and inexpensive weight control aid that can easily be incorporated into any weight loss program. The choice of tea or extract offers something for everybody. Natural and safe, green tea weight loss should feature in your program if you want to keep the weight off permanently.

Corrolation Between Mediterranean Diet and Cancer

By pinky, 17 January, 2010, 1 Comment

We recently had a family member pass away from colon cancer. Although I’m not entirely sure how long this had been going on, I was told she had suffered abdominal pains for 6 months  and had been unable to eat.

I also learned she a made numerous trips to her doctor and had tests performed, only to have the doctor tell her to take tylenol for her pain. I sure doesn’t sound very promising when tests don’t reveal anything, or should I say I find that very hard to believe.

Anyway, I found these articles about the corrolation between the Mediterranean diet and cancer that I wanted to share.

Use Your Diet To Fight Cancer | Cure Pages

Most cancer is caused by lightning. It strikes out of the blue. But cancer doesn’t just happen by chance. It has a cause. Diet is one of the environmental.

Benefits of Soy Protein

By pinky, 6 January, 2010, 8 Comments
Soybean plants.

Soy protein is emerging as one of the great alternative protein sources for human consumption. Health experts are all excited about how soy protein can change the face of nutrition. So what’s all the rage?

Soy Protein

Soy beans contain complete protein. It’s one of the best protein that is easily digested among all protein sources. Soy beans also contain little or no fat and have virtually no cholesterol. If you’re lactose intolerant, soy beans are great because they contain no lactose.

Being a plant protein, soy is free from steroids and antibiotics that animal protein contains. It is also free from the parasites that contaminate some of these products. They also contain none of the diseases you can contract from meat sources such as Mad Cow Disease, and Foot and Mouth Disease.

Vegetarians love this bean since it provides a comparable – if not better – source of protein compared to its animal counterpart. It provides a protein that is better and easier to digest and is comparable to most protein supplements.

Versatility

Soy beans are very versatile. Various cuisines, especially Asian ones recognize the value of  soy beans. A variety of naturally delicacies are all soy based: tofu, soy pudding, Soya milk, and meat substitutes – not to mention condiments such as soy sauce, and hoi sin sauce.

The Great Substitute

Soy is low in fat and can be used to substitute most protein sources. When cooking, you can use soy substitutes instead of flour for a low fat alternative. This makes it a great protein source if you are looking to lose weight without compromising your protein requirements.

Although  bodybuilders are currently debating how soy can be a help to bodybuilders, it doesn’t take away anything from what soy can contribute to the overall health of a person.

It’s better to stick to natural protein rather than processed protein if possible, as processed foods typically have some risk attached to them. The best use of this food can be attributed to how it perfectly fits into anyone’s low-fat, high-protein diet.

Soy products can be incorporated into shakes and drinks. And being lactose-free, lactose intolerant people will still be able to get their milkshake fix without experiencing the side effects of lactose.

Soy products are also a great source of other nutrients such as saponins, isoflavones, and phytosterol. Saponins help support a healthy immune system. It also combines with cholesterol to avoid increased absorption of cholesterol in the body. Phytosterols also help reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the body in the same way saponins do.

Isoflavones are powerful antioxidants and prevent the effects of free radicals in the body. They prevent many of the signs of aging and have been known to help prevent cancer. This alone makes soy a miracle protein source in its own right.

Isoflavones, along with vitamins A,C, and E are among the front liners in the fight against such disease – they also counter the effects of pollution, and stress.

How Much is Too Much

Unlike other protein sources, it is pretty safe to consume a fair amount of soy products. While allergies to soy products exist, cases are few and far between. When changing to a soy diet, however, you should consult your physician or your nutritionist. Ask specifically if the soy interferes with any prescription drugs you are taking.

Benefits of Tea

By pinky, 5 January, 2010, 7 Comments

Tea provides us with a lot of health benefits. For one, tea contains antioxidants which prevent or slow down the oxidative damage to our body. This simply means lowering the risk of suffering from various diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Tea also happens to be much healthier than coffee because in terms of caffeine content, you only get about 30 to 40mg per cup compared to coffee which has about 135 mg. of caffeine.

Another benefit of drinking tea is its ability to strengthen your immune system.  No one yet knows  the cause of the common cold but it still happens. If you drink tea regularly, your immune system will be strong enough to prevent you from getting this contagious infection.  I should know since I am an avid tea drinker. I consume herbal teas as well as black, green, and rooibos teas. I haven’t had a cold nor the flu for as long as I can remember.

Although water is the best thing to drink whenever you feel dehydrated, studies show that tea can provide the same thing as well. This is because tea is a diuretic making you urinate regularly so there is a balance between what goes in and out of your body.

No Calories

Tea doesn’t have any calories unlike those found in energy drinks. This is because it does not contain any sugar. The only time that you will be ingesting calories is when you decide to add sweetener or milk with this drink .

Increases Metabolism

Overweight people can benefit from drinking tea because drinking tea regularly increases your metabolism. In short, you burn faster what you eat making it possible for you to burn at least 70 to 80 calories per day. At that rate, you can lose almost 8 pounds after one year.

Type of Teas

But what kind of tea should you drink? Well there are too many to mention so let’s just stick with two namely black and green tea. Both come from the same plant but what sets these two apart is how these are processed. The leaves for making green tea are dried for a shorter period of time compared to the other one. Black tea also goes through a fermenting process before this is packed and sold in the market.

The best part about making this your regular health drink is that you can serve this hot or cold. This allows you to have it any time of the day or night so all you need is some water, a cup or a tall glass.

You can buy tea in the grocery and in some specialty stores. Remember, all teas contain the same amount of flavonoids. What tea will be your favorite depends from what tree it comes from and which of these is suitable to your taste. You could say that this depends on the person similar to what choice of coffee you order when you decide to go to Starbucks.

Tea has been around for many years and its success all this time is because it is a health drink. You should try one today and then see if you like it. Who knows? You might even be addicted to it and never again coffee.

Prescription medication is only a temporary band aid. In order to have strong healthy bones, they need to be constantly broken down and rebuild, which is what the body does. If your body doesn’t have the needed resources for this constant process, putting a band aid on the problem is not going to do you much good.
